SUPERPOWER: AFROFUTURISTIC IMAGINATIONS

 

The second Artwalk exhibition in celebration of Black History/Black Futures Month features work that focuses on the ethos of Afrofuturism: The spirit of a cultural movement of African Diasporic ideals, exploring themes of spirituality, surrealism, performance, music, science fiction, and technology. A creative articulation of  thought reimagines the future through a Black cultural lens. The action of forming new ideas and concepts rooted in belief systems through an artistic aesthetic, provides the framework for many of the images presented by the seven artists highlighted in this exhibition. 

 

The Afrofuturist author, Ytasha Womack, may have said it best, “the imagination of the futurist is an amazing blueprint of a wish to finally depart from the history and memories that have been experienced and inherited, and to finally be a part of an equally inclusive world.” 

 

The works displayed in SUPERPOWER: AFROFUTURISTIC IMAGINATIONS, fuses history and culture for an extraordinary and uninhibited presentation of visual poetics, inviting the audience to consider their own place in the world or one in which they have a hand in creating.
